BYOPVR Featured in WYFF4 NBC Segment (sorta)

Posted on 19 June 2006 by

I love it when mainstream press picks up on the DIY PVR phenomenon, and I love it even more when byopvr.com get’s a plug 🙂

We didn’t get a mention in the actual video segment: click on JL Make Your Own DVR but we did get some good linkage in the follow up blog post Click On JL: Build Your Own PVR

First of all, let me start out by saying that I love TiVo. I’ve had a DirecTV TiVo, and now I use a cable company provided DVR. Pause. Rewind. I love all the features.

But, I do have a problem with paying for the service month after month. It’s not that I’m cheap, but $10-$12 per month adds up pretty fast – especially if you’re paying for cable and Internet access on top of that.

Thanks for the link JL! If any other traditional or online press folks out there, I’m available for interviews, comments, or background information about building PVRs/HTPC 🙂

HTPCGB Flash Tutorial on Demystifying Multiple TV Tuners

Posted on 13 June 2006 by

BYOPVR forum regular HTPCGB put together a flash tutorial that explains visually the concepts of recording one show while watching another show on your PC PVR. It also covers things like what to do if you have digital cable or satellite and explains some of the basics that seem to confound most newbies!

We love user contributions to the community knowledge base! Who better than the folks who were once newbies (we were all one once!) to explain things in a manner that everyone can easily understand! Anyone can freely add content or edit existing pages to the DIY PVR HTPC FAQ… and considering how I left the CAn I watch something else while recording with 1 tuner entry incomplete, it’s a great help that HTPCGB stepped up to the plate and made an animated tutorial that gets the point across beautifully. THANKS HTPCGB!

SnapStream BeyondTV 4.3 Released: DivX 6.1 & ATI Theater 650 Support!

Posted on 08 June 2006 by

The SnapStream folks are very busy today it seems… with an update to their BeyondTV PVR Software to version 4.3.

They sent us this snippet describing what’s new:

“Some of the new things in Beyond TV 4.3 are:

* Enhanced HDTV support: We now support ShowSqueeze for HDTV recordings, so you can save more HDTV recordings without loss of quality. HDTV recordings can be ShowSqueeze’d to either DivX or Windows Media formats. We also now strip out extra sub-channel information so recordings are up to 50% smaller. Disk fragmentation has been reduced, which makes a big difference to huge HD recordings. And finally SmartSkip (our commercial detection feature) is way faster on HDTV recordings now.

* DivX 6.1 Support (with Intel Optimizations): Beyond TV 4.3 is the first DVR to support DivX 6.1. This brings Intel optimizations to Beyond TV that can result in up to 300% faster encoding and even smaller file sizes.

* ATI Theater 650 support: We’re also the first to support the ATI Theater 650 — you’ll start to see these cards commerically hit the market in the next couple of weeks. They are great, because they combine analog TV tuning (w/ hardware encoder) and ATSC/HDTV support in one card. There’s no other TV tuner card that combines these two things together on a single chip.

* …And more: There are quite a number of other updates to Beyond TV 4.3. See more in the press releases linked below”

SnapStream Announces BeyondTV Buzz

Posted on 08 June 2006 by

SnapStream is launching Beyond TV Buzz today.

Beyond TV Buzz presents:

1) Top recorded episodes
2) Top upcoming recordings

“…for the Beyond TV community (users can opt-in to be a part of the community at installation). The “Top recorded episodes” list gives interesting information about the most popular series — for example, since sweeps and season finales just ended, you’ll see a lot of re-runs topping the list. You can also dig deep past the top 15 shows and and explore the long tail of television to find delectable shows like “Good Eats: Tender is the Loin” on the Food Channel . And top upcoming recordings is a way to get day-by-day recommendations on what to watch or record, based on the community’s top upcoming recordings.

We are headed in the direction of creating what we call a social DVR experience and Beyond TV Buzz is the first (small) step towards that.”

Beyond TV Buzz kinda reminds me of digg for your television/PVR.

Silverstone LC20M HTPC Case Reviewed

Posted on 08 June 2006 by

Silverstone LC20M HTPC Case Revewed over at Short Media.

“A media centre must be “at home” in the living room. To accomplish this, it needs a case which is small, elegant, and quiet; it should blend in with other audio / video equipment and be as silent as possible whilst still offering adequate cooling to the beefy PC components housed within. The item we’re looking at today is part of Silverstone’s attempt to meet all those demands in a fairly standard form factor PC.”
