Build Your Own PVR FAQs (frequently-asked questions)
|
|
Category: Main -> About this site
| Answer | · What's this site all about anyways?
It's dedicated to building your own Personal Video Recorder (PVR), Digital Video Recorder (DVR), or Home Theater PC (HTPC) from scratch using PC parts and software. It's much more fun, geeky, and flexible than buying a commercial PVR like Tivo, or ReplayTV.
It's meant to be community driven... People helping people with technical issues, inspiring eachother to make cooler home theater PC applications/mods/etc. Don't be shy. Post a question in the forum / message board Back to top
| · But Rampy, don't you have a Tivo?
Why yes... yes I do. In fact I love my Tivo! But before I was given one as a christmas present I was drooling over mini-itx boards (not literally that would ruin them!) and dreaming of PVR250 cards. I love the idea and spirit of DIY and Build Your Own. Plus I'm a geek, and I like geek projects: witness my previous geek project UberCade: MAME Taito Arcade cabinet conversion Back to top
| · Do I have to register? I am lazy...
Currently you don't HAVE to register to the site in order to post in the forum or comment on articles, etc... That may change in the future depending on abuse.
It's just a good idea if you are gonna be a regular to have a consistent tag (and accrue forum ranks) and get to add signatures/profile information and some other doo dads that Anonymous Cowards, I mean users, don't get... So sign up, it helps my ego to know someone is interested in this stuff enough to register and might come back. =) Back to top
| · Why is the site called "build your own PVR" shouldn't it be called "build your own DVR"?
Definitions:
PVR stands for Personal Video Recorder
DVR stands for Digital Video Recorder
HTPC stand for Home Theater Personal Computer
PVR/DVR is a piece of electronic equipments that can record shows at a certain time. The difference between them, is that a DVR is digital only.
HTPC is a computer that handles more then just recording shows, it's your media hub. It plays MP3s, photos, home movies, DVDs, records shows, video games, and encoded video (DIVX, XVID, MPEG2, etc.).
Your VCR, scheduled to record a show, is now your PVR (not an ideal PVR solution, but a solution nevertheless). Here at BYOPVR we like to focus on the digital side of video recording (the PVR-X50 tuner card, the 400gig hard drives, the Mini-ITX motherboards)... but we are also interested in all of the other functions of an HTPC/PVR/DVR.
Basically, BYOPVR is just a trademark, domain, or title, that gives people a reference for what kind of things get talked about here. Not a limiter, just an indicator.
Rampy's Note: --> It was a slightly arbitrary decision, but I think that PVR is going to become common parlance for "tivo like functionality" over DVR, and can only hope that I'm right (or that byodvr.com is still available) =) Back to top
