Media Portal

A couple of weeks ago I stumbled on an application that I would like to share with you. I decided to another run to find a HTPC application then the one I was using (myHTPC) since it is no longer developed. I tried several but in the end there was one that was really easy to choose, Media Portal.

Media Portal is a really young application that is open source. This was something that I thought was important for a chance of survival. I installed it and been trying the different aspects of it for some time now.

First of all you will get an application that covers TV (recording, scheduling, timeshift etc), Pictures, Movies, Music, Radio, Recepies, Weather and misc programs. This is most definatly more then you can find in many other applications that has been out for much longer.

During my weeks testing this application I have had very few problems. I am sure that there might be problems but they have a very active forum with many members that involve themselfes in the process of developing MP and this is somthing really good. There are updates released for MP on a weekly basis and that is both good and bad. The good thing is that there are new features, bugfixes coming out all the time and the bad thing is that you spend time on figuring out new features very often, then again you have a choise not to install the updates :)

It is hard to pinpoint bad sides of MP since there are some areas still in development but I have one thing that I am missing (in this and almost every other HTPC application) and that is DVB support for digital broadcasts. However, I have seen discussions on this in the forum and hopefully this will be implemented in the near future.

Yeah it's pretty cool. The setup is a bit tricky for someone new to the game. The tuner also has a few hickups (had to manually set my channels). I had settled on showshiffter till I found this one. I'm sold.

i dont like media portal at all. the GUI is ugly (every skin i tried anyways). its really slow (on a 2.6ghz machine) and well my tv cards come up all green (both 350 and 150). it has some good points yes, but at the end of the day i dont like it, you cant like everything right? if your looking for a windows pvr solution, i say just go with gbpvr, its much more stable, has some really good looking skins, well now it does, took ages but they finally have them. and output via my 350!

MediaPortal has DVB Support now! Look at the release notes for 0.1.0.3. "Support for Skystar2 DVB-S" http://mediaportal.sourceforge.net/

MP is absolutely fantastic! I've tested it against Meedio / TVCentral (which both claim to be sort of myHTPC 2, but are both commercial products now). And I had very few problems setting up MediaPortal! OpenSource, terrific development pace, friendly community, top coders, "sexy" look & feel and the excitement that this product has so much potential to grow.... Check it out, it's worth it! D.
