Currently it\'s running on the Windows platform. However, the system is design to be platform independent so that in the future it could be deployed on other platforms like Linux.
Use Case Analysis
The system is a Home Theater PC (HTPC) front-end software. The software provides the as easy-to-use interface as the user interface of any home electronics. The media files can be located on local machine, or on others PC through home network, or even on removable storages like CD/DVD, compact flash or secure digital cards.

Homebrew PVR : Communications From Elsewhere Category : Start / PVR Project Examples Homebrew PVR : Communications From Elsewhere
I\\\'ve been wanting to replace my aging Tivo for a while now. It\\\'s developed an encoder bug which runs a faint blue line from top to bottom around 1/3 of the way in from the left. It\\\'s annoying. (And since the first thing I did when I bought my Tivo was open it up and add another hard drive, it\\\'s well out of warranty.)
A new 80-hour Tivo with a lifetime service subscription costs $650. If I want to add the Home Media Option which allows me to play mp3s, look at photos, and schedule recordings over the internet, that\\\'s another $100. I love Tivo; my experience with the series-1 model has been great. It really did change the way I watch TV, and I don\\\'t want to go back to watching TV without something Tivo-like. But I bet I can build a comparable machine for less than $750. (Which is, coincidentally, the amount I just unexpectedly sold a domain name for. It\\\'s kismet, I tell you.) And since it\\\'ll be open-source software driving it, I can make changes if I don\\\'t like the way it works. Added on: 17-Jan-2004 | hits: 3533 Report broken link | Details

Building a Linux-based time-shifting box
NOTE:
This document is still a work in progress, as is my TV time-shifting box. They both "work," but there is still room for improvement. The time-shifting box works fine, but it still could use a spiffy user interface. Likewise, this document contains a lot of information, but I expect that it will grow significantly over time. Every time I look at this I find myself realizing that I forgot to discuss something. Send me an email if there are subjects you would like me to address. I'll see what I can do.

I built this infrared receiver as part of a larger project I am working on to make a Personal Video Recorder (PVR). That project is based on MythTV. There will be a separate document for that project forthcoming, but in a nut shell, I have a server machine in the garage (AMD 1400MHz) with two TV Tuner cards recording my favorite shows, and I watch them (possibly in real time) on a frontend machine based on a VIA EPIA M9000 mainboard.
