Building a Linux-based time-shifting box  Popular
This is one of the original ground breaking attempts at diy pvr... well it's the first one I saw via a link on slashdot. It's a good primer for those of you willing to try linux and have lower horsepower machines to work with. Building a Linux-based time-shifting box NOTE: This document is still a work in progress, as is my TV time-shifting box. They both "work," but there is still room for improvement. The time-shifting box works fine, but it still could use a spiffy user interface. Likewise, this document contains a lot of information, but I expect that it will grow significantly over time. Every time I look at this I find myself realizing that I forgot to discuss something. Send me an email if there are subjects you would like me to address. I'll see what I can do.

Duncan's Windows XP PVR-in-a-radio  Popular
Not satisfied with the current PVR offerings from TiVo, ReplayTV, nor Windows Media Center (not to mention associated fees), The Last Minute decided to build their own personal video recorder, using Windows XP Pro, with SageTV and Zap2it as a program guide and recording software. They’ve even managed to set their recorder to automatically detect and skip commercials, and they are still able to surf the Web via TV, since it is still Windows, afterall. And the big bonus? They jammed it in an old-school lookin’ radio just for kicks. Props, props

Homebrew PVR : Communications From Elsewhere  Popular
Homebrew PVR : Communications From Elsewhere
I\\\'ve been wanting to replace my aging Tivo for a while now. It\\\'s developed an encoder bug which runs a faint blue line from top to bottom around 1/3 of the way in from the left. It\\\'s annoying. (And since the first thing I did when I bought my Tivo was open it up and add another hard drive, it\\\'s well out of warranty.)

A new 80-hour Tivo with a lifetime service subscription costs $650. If I want to add the Home Media Option which allows me to play mp3s, look at photos, and schedule recordings over the internet, that\\\'s another $100. I love Tivo; my experience with the series-1 model has been great. It really did change the way I watch TV, and I don\\\'t want to go back to watching TV without something Tivo-like. But I bet I can build a comparable machine for less than $750. (Which is, coincidentally, the amount I just unexpectedly sold a domain name for. It\\\'s kismet, I tell you.) And since it\\\'ll be open-source software driving it, I can make changes if I don\\\'t like the way it works.

Also see his progress via his updates scroll around his technical category archive to get a sense of the refinements he\'s made and issues he\'s had. He\'s got an extensive price list of the materials he used. also of note he used something other than mini-itx and hauppauge pvr x50 cards... so that\'s of interest, eh?
