Plextor and SageTV have just announced a new external USB 2.0 PVR device for $99 bucks, the ConvertX PX-TV100U PVR with SageTV lite software included. It has a TV tuner and software encoding in mpeg1/mpeg2 and DivX video formats.
We’ve previously reviewed the ConvertX PVR PX-TV402U and am glad to see that the major PVR device manufacturers are listening to the users and are bundling better PVR software with the hardware. SageTV Lite appears to be (from the PR description) to be a relatively full subset of features of regular SageTV but with only a 3-day EPG for U.S. AND Canadian listings. It’ll be interesting as to how that the shorter EPG data will effect day to day usage (regular SageTV 2.2 has a 14 day integrated EPG for comparison’s sake).

Plextor Introduces the Simplest Way to
Watch, Pause, Record TV on a Personal Computer
New ConvertX PVR Features Built-in TV Tuner,
Free Integrated Electronic Programming Guide
FREMONT, Calif. – July 5, 2005– Plextor® Corp., a leading developer and manufacturer of high-performance digital media equipment, today announced the ConvertX™ PX-TV100U Personal Video Recorder (PVR), a complete hardware and software solution for watching, pausing, and recording live TV on a PC. Priced at $99.00 (MSRP), the ConvertX PX-TV100U is an inexpensive alternative to standalone PVRs that cost hundreds of dollars and require monthly service fees.
The ConvertX PX-TV100U is incredibly easy to install and use – users simply plug a cable, satellite, or antenna into the PX-TV100U’s built-in TV tuner, and then use High Speed USB 2.0 to connect to their computer. The PX-TV100U uses high quality real-time video compression software to record TV programs to hard disk, CD, or DVD in several of the most popular video formats, including MPEG-1/VCD, MPEG-2/DVD, or DivX video. The PX-TV100U can also capture home movies and other video from a camcorder, VCR, or DVD player through composite and S-video connections.
“The PX-TV100U was designed to be the simplest and most affordable way to watch, pause and record live TV on a PC,” said Howard Wing, vice president sales and marketing, Plextor. “Whether you are a businessperson who wants an easy way to record some TV shows to your laptop to watch on an airplane, a student who wants to add a TV to your bedroom or dorm room without the hassle and expense of buying a separate TV, or just someone who wants to watch some TV while surfing the net and record a few
shows for the kids, the PX-TV100U is for you. Not only did we include all the features people would want, we did it at an affordable price and without those irritating monthly service fees.”
The PX-TV100U comes bundled with the easy to use SageTV Lite PVR software which makes it easy for users to watch, pause, rewind, fast forward, and record live TV from a full screen 10 foot user interface. SageTV Lite includes a free 3-day integrated Electronic Programming Guide (EPG) so users always know what is on TV and can easily select upcoming programs to record. The free EPG service covers all cable, satellite, and broadcast television networks in both the US and Canada.
”Most bundled PVR solutions strip out vital features to make them more affordable” said Dan Kardatzke, President & COO of SageTV. “Plextor and SageTV worked closely together to come up with an affordable bundled solution that gives consumers all the essential features they want with the benefits of a 3-day EPG to record all your favorite shows.” “SageTV Lite also makes it easy for customers that need more features to upgrade to our SageTV Media Center software.
The PX-TV100U also comes bundled with Ulead VideoStudio SE DVD for video editing and authoring interactive DVDs. Award-winning VideoStudio features an innovative Movie Wizard that will automatically edit a video complete with titles, transitions and special effects. For advanced users, the VideoStudio Editor includes high-end video editing features, including titles, transitions, special effects, automatic background music generation, picture-in-picture, and video overlays, as well as DivX and MPEG-2 smart rendering.

SageTV Releases SageTV Lite PVR Software for Windows Hardware OEMs;
First Use Will Be with Plextor’s New Personal Video Recorder
Software Includes Integrated U.S. and Canadian Electronic Program Guide
OAKBROOK TERRACE, IL (July 5, 2005) — SageTV, LLC, today announced the availability of SageTV Lite, a low-cost personal video recording (PVR) software application designed for OEMs that manufacture TV tuners and MPEG encoding devices for Windows PCs. This PVR-only edition of the comprehensive SageTV Media Center platform will debut this month with Plextor’s new ConvertX™ PX-TV100U Personal Video Recorder, a $99 (MSRP) PC accessory that gives consumers the capabilities of a standalone PVR without the high cost and monthly service fees.
SageTV Lite enables OEMs to produce hardware devices allowing end users to watch, pause, rewind, fast forward and record live TV on their Windows PCs, as well as to access a built-in electronic program guide (EPG) with three days of U.S. and Canadian television listings. The integration of the program guide is a key competitive advantage because it eliminates the need for users to switch to a separate online application to plan their TV viewing and recording. A full-screen 10-foot user interface allows users to access the program guide, select programs to record, and control all other functions on their TVs from the comfort of their couch.
As an additional benefit, SageTV Lite enables OEMs to offer an upgrade path to consumers who want full Media Center functionality. Users can add a 14-day integrated EPG, full-season recording of favorite shows, music and photo management, CD and DVD burning, home network media streaming, and a variety of other capabilities by upgrading to the full-featured SageTV Media Center platform.
“The rise of personal video recording is creating a lucrative new product category for Windows hardware OEMs, and they are looking for a reliable and easy-to-use software platform to support these efforts,” said Dan Kardatzke, President and COO of SageTV. “As a subset of our third-generation SageTV Media Center software, SageTV Lite offers a mature and low-cost solution with the critical inclusion of an integrated electronic program guide that greatly simplifies user operation. This makes it possible — for the first time — to build an affordable PVR peripheral without removing an important function that can mean the difference between success and failure on the retail floor.”
“Three of our key criteria in building our newest ConvertX PVR were low price, ease of use and a built-in electronic program guide. SageTV Lite has made all three features possible,” said Howard Wing, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Plextor. “This is a case where we needed the technology to support our vision, and SageTV was the only vendor on the market that was able to deliver.”
SageTV also offers a Linux OEM edition of its SageTV Media Center application that eliminates Windows licensing fees as well as the more expensive hardware required to deploy Windows-based systems. The Linux edition enables OEMs to create custom-branded standalone media center, set-top and broadband video on demand products at attractive price points.
